Special Benefits and
Privileges for Berry Scholars
In addition to the
benefits accorded to University Honors Program students, Berry Scholars receive the following additional privileges and benefits:
Academic
Berry Scholars enroll in the
six-course Integrated Berry Scholars Seminar Sequence. Seminars are discussion- and research-oriented, construed in a creative manner, designed to substitute for general education requirements and instructed by some of the most accomplished professors at the University of Dayton.
While each Scholars Seminar is an unique experience, the required capstone Scholars Systems Design Seminar is unique among the nation's various "Scholars" programs in that it is instructed by faculty in the University of Dayton School of Engineering. This course, therefore, more than symbolizes the University of Dayton's attention to the integration of professional and liberal arts education, the integration of theory and practice, and to the importance of collaboration in projects designed to solve real and pressing problems in the community; this flagship course manifests these values year in and year out.
Additional academic benefits:
- Berry Scholars may register on the first day of their class registration period.
- Berry Scholars receive enhanced library benefits.
- They may take graduate courses in their majors.
- Berry Scholars have the opportunity for personal interaction with visiting scholars, writers, artists and other visitors to campus.
- Students graduating from the Berry Scholars Program receive a University of Dayton degree with Berry Scholars designation.
Financial
- Incoming Berry Scholars receive
increased merit scholarships.
[The priority date for applications is
December 15.]
- Funds are provided to support
Honors Thesis project research
and Berry Scholars are eligible for support for international learning.
Social
- Incoming Berry Scholars
participate in a leadership program during the summer before
their first year.
- Prior to graduation, Berry
Scholars are expected to participate in
service learning and leadership
programs.
- Berry Scholars housing is
available for students:
"Junior and senior honors
housing consist of specific houses (see below) and Garden
Apartments. The honors lottery held in January is for honors
students with groups that consist of at least 1/2 or majority of
group members as honors students. So a group of 5 would need to
have at least 3 honors students to participate for the 5-person
house lottery. If a honors group is not successful within the
honors lottery, they are able to participate within the general
student lottery.
"Junior and senior students are not guaranteed UD housing.
However, junior and senior honors students are guaranteed
housing; however, the guarantee of housing provides the student
with the housing that we have available to offer the honors
students. Historically, we've always been able to offer any
junior or senior student housing if the student was willing to
accept the housing that was available. Our guarantee of honors
housing does not guarantee a specific-size residence. We often
have 4-person apartments available to students and we'll allow
5-person groups to divide up into groups of 4 and 1 or 3 and 2
with the understanding that we will fill vacancies within the
apartments if the group members do not have anyone to fill the
spots."
