Guidelines for Preparing an Honors Thesis Research Grant Proposal

Funds are available from the University Honors Program to support Honors thesis research. Typical awards are generally in the $300 to $700 range, and are based upon the needs and merits of the individual student’s research proposal. The maximum funding that can be requested is $1,500.

These funds usually are used to offset expenses such as the following:

  • Computer software or time
  • Laboratory equipment or supplies
  • Artistic supplies or equipment
  • Purchasing or leasing special software
  • Costs related to conducting field research, including living and/or travel expenses
  • Supplies necessary to carry out research
  • Costs for preparing, copying, and mailing surveys
  • Books or periodicals not available through normal library sources
  • Living expenses in university housing when the research necessitates local housing

Typically funds are not granted for expenses such as the following:

  • Meals
  • Equipment (Any equipment purchased will become the property of your academic department.)
  • Any personnel costs, including payments to research subjects and/or research assistants.
  • Printed materials that should be available through the University Library (including the OhioLink facilities)

All Thesis Research Grant Proposals must identify the thesis topic, fully explain the research design, and identify and justify the estimated expenses the grant will help defray.

Please complete the Thesis Research Grant Proposal based on the guidelines that are included. All Thesis Research Grant Proposals must be completed and submitted to the University Honors Program Office, 125 Alumni Hall, by March 26, 2008. Grant awards are announced after April 11.
